It’s hard to believe that it’s been a quarter of a century since the bumbling, yet endearing, Inspector Gadget first hit the big screen. Released on July 23, 1999, the live-action comedy film was a fresh take on the beloved animated series.
Starring Matthew Broderick as the titular character, the movie followed the story of John Brown, a bumbling security guard transformed into a high-tech crime fighter after a near-fatal explosion. With his new gadget-filled body and the help of his clever niece, Penny (Michelle Trachtenberg), and her trusty dog, Brain, Gadget set out to capture the evil Dr. Claw (Rupert Everett).
While the film took some liberties with the original source material, it still managed to capture the spirit of the cartoon. The combination of physical comedy, over-the-top gadgets, and a campy villain made for an entertaining family film.
Though not a critical darling, Inspector Gadget has certainly earned its place in the hearts of many ’90s kids. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the timeless appeal of its quirky characters and humorous premise.
