While the kingdom of Genovia may be abuzz with anticipation for the return of Princess Mia Thermopolis, one key cast member remains in the dark. Chris Pine, who charmed audiences as the enigmatic Nicholas Devereaux in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, has admitted that he’s clueless about the upcoming third installment.
In a recent interview on Today With Hoda & Jenna, Pine expressed his surprise and confusion when asked about the project. “I don’t know anything,” he confessed. “Call Disney! Call Bob Iger!”
The hosts, Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, were equally shocked by Pine’s lack of involvement. “You don’t know anything?” Hager exclaimed.
“The answer is I’ve gotta see,” Pine added. “I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic.”
Despite Pine’s uncertainty, development on The Princess Diaries 3 is progressing steadily. Adele Lim, known for her work on Crazy Rich Asians, is set to direct the film, with Flora Greeson penning the script. While plot details remain under wraps, it’s expected that the sequel will continue the story from The Princess Diaries and Royal Engagement, rather than rebooting the franchise.
Lim expressed her excitement about joining the project in a statement, saying, “As a diehard fan of the original ‘Princess Diaries,’ I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
The prospect of a third Princess Diaries film has been a source of speculation since 2022, when Anne Hathaway hinted at its development in an interview with V Magazine. While fans eagerly await official announcements, the question of whether Pine will reprise his iconic role remains a royal mystery.
